While it is not an official state, Washington D.C. is perhaps the most important place in America. It was named after president George Washington, and the "C" in D.C. is named for Christopher Columbus.

As the home of our national government, hundreds of politicians reside in the District of Columbia, including the President of the United States and his family. While the main purpose of the district is to conduct federal business, there are many other components that make it the center of the U.S. in more ways than one.

Before becoming our nation's capital, it was the port of Georgetown. It is now home to hundreds of historical museums and monuments and receives millions of visitors per year. It also has some of the most popular tourist attractions, including the National Air and Space Museum and the Washington Monument.

Washington D.C. has its own football team, the Washington Redskins and a MLB team, the Nationals. The Nationals Stadium is the first "green" stadium in the country.
