General Information
Why Do I Need a Maryland Public Adjuster Bond?
The Maryland Insurance Administration requires all licensed public adjusters to file a $20,000 surety bond as a condition of licensure under Maryland Insurance Code Section 10-405.1. This bond protects policyholders from financial harm resulting from erroneous acts, failure to act, fraud, or unfair practices committed by a public adjuster in the course of their duties.
The bond must be executed and issued by an insurer authorized to issue surety bonds in Maryland, must be in favor of the State of Maryland, and must specifically authorize recovery by the Commissioner on behalf of any person in Maryland who sustains damages as a result of the public adjuster's misconduct. If the bond is terminated or becomes impaired, the public adjuster's authority to act automatically terminates. The bond may not be cancelled without at least 30 days' prior written notice filed with the Commissioner and given to the license holder.
